How to do it
- Before you pull out, set your route, music or podcast, and mount the phone if you need maps.
- Turn on your phone's driving or do-not-disturb mode so texts and alerts wait.
- Put the phone out of reach, such as in the glove box or a bag on the back seat, if you are tempted to check it.
- If you must call or text, pull over somewhere safe first, or have a passenger handle it.
Why it helps
Reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road for about five seconds, which at highway speed is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed. Distracted driving is a major cause of crashes, and the risk applies to routine, familiar drives too.
Be careful
Hands-free calls still pull your attention off the road. Save calls for when you are parked.
